Trawsfynydd is situated approximately 8 miles from Blaenau Ffestiniog and 12 miles from Dolgellau. Trawsfynydd was the home of the Welsh bard, Hedd Wyn, who died on the battlefields during World War I, just before he was to receive the winning prize at the National Eisteddfod.

Gellilydan is a small village located approximately 3 miles from Trawsfynydd and 6 miles from Blaenau Ffestiniog.

There are little or no shops, services and facilities in the village.

Maentwrog is based approximately 5 miles from Blaenau Ffestiniog and 7 miles from Porthmadog. The River Dwyryd runs alongside the village. Maentwrog means "Twrog's stone". According to legend, a giant known as Twrog hurled a boulder from the top of a hill down into the settlement, destroying a pagan altar. This stone is said to be the one located in St Twrog’s Church courtyard. It is said that if one rubs this boulder one is fated to return to the village in the future.
