Information - Areas of Gwynedd - Abermaw

Area profile

Barmouth is a busy tourist resort in summer because of the sandy beach.  It is situated on the estuary of the River Mawddach and Cardigan Bay. It is located 10 miles from Dolgellau and 11miles from Harlech. The town has a railway station, with trains operating on the Cambrian Line.

The town grew around the shipbuilding industry, and more recently as a seaside resort. Notable buildings include the medieval Tŷ Gwyn tower house, the 19th century Tŷ Crwn roundhouse prison and St John’s Church.

The southern end of Barmouth Bridge, which takes the Cambrian Line over the River Mawddach, is now the start of the Mawddach Trail, a cycle path and walk way that utilises the old trackbed.
