Local Housing Associations

Housing Associations

Housing Associations are non-profit making, independent bodies which build and manage accommodation and provide support to those in housing need.

In the Gwynedd area there are a number of properties managed by different Housing Associations. Housing Assocations are able to build new properties and the number of homes may increase in the future.

Currently, Housing Associations also have their own housing waiting lists, however this will change when the common register is launched. The Housing Associations can allocate 50% of their empty homes to people who are on their list presently. The other 50% of the Association's properties are "nominated" to Gwynedd Council. As well as being on the Council's waiting list you can also apply to the Housing Associations directly.

Anyone over the age of 16 can apply to a Housing Association Waiting List but you should consider the following:

  • Where do you want to live - is there Housing Association properties in that area ?
  • How long will you have to wait for a property?
  • Would renting privately suit you better?

Currently, Housing Associations are required by the Welsh Assembly Government to help the Council find accommodation for those in need. They must ask the Council to provide names, i.e "nominees" for at least 50% of their properties that become empty. Gwynedd Council is able to nominate applicants from its own housing waiting list to Housing Associations with properties in the county.
